Course Description

What dangers are faced by LGBTQ+ populations across the globe? Join our 8-week course delving into the modern history of LGBTQ+ identities, exploring the interplay between LGBTQ+ rights and colonialism, populist and authoritarian leaders, and the impacts of globalisation. Get insights into various theories shaping LGBTQ+ populations worldwide, with real-life case studies from diverse regions of the world. Perfect for those new to global LGBTQ+ human rights and those seeking deep knowledge and understanding in a structured, 2-hour weekly session. This is part one of a course themed around the dangers faced by global LGBTQ+ populations, with part two, resistance, offered later in 2025. Course structure: 1. What are meant by LGBTQ+ identity politics and where did they come from? 2. The impact of colonialism 3. What’s gender got to do with it? 4. How has globalisation impacted upon LGBTQ+ populations? 5. Shifting sands? What does LGBTQ+ life look like in the SWANA region? 6. Case study: Sub-Saharan Africa and Caribbean 7. The ‘Iron Man’ of Europe and his allies: Russia and Eastern Europe 8. Danger ahead? The rise of populism and the far-right Course faciliators: Drew Dalton (He/Him) Drew completed his undergraduate in BSc (Hons) Sociology and Social Research, and has a number of Master's degrees, including MA Gender Research, MSc Social Research, and an MPhil in Sociology. He is the CEO of ReportOUT, a global human rights organisation for LGBTQ+ people, and is the current Chair of the UK Alliance for Global Equality. Drew brings twenty years' experience in the NGO sector and is a former academic and Senior Lecturer in Sociology, specialising in LGBTQ+ human rights and global queerphobia. Drew is currently writing a book about global queerphobia for Bloomsbury Publishers. Ross Othen-Reeves (He/Him) Ross completed his undergraduate degree in International Development and a Master's in Human Rights at the University of Sussex, UK, focusing on global LGBTQ+ rights. His field research took him to Malawi and Ethiopia, earning him two distinct academic prizes. Ross spent nearly a decade in the Global LGBTQ+ Rights sector, holding key roles including Advisor at Frontline AIDS, Head of Global Programmes at Stonewall, and Chair of the UK Alliance for Global Equality. He is now a freelance writer focused on LGBTQ+ issues.

Cancellation Policy

We cannot accept bookings once the course has started. Refund and cancellation: You can cancel your own booking via this website up to one hour before the course starts. You will be eligible for a refund by contacting the site owner, which can only be returned by payment back to your bank account. However, if you have booked and paid for the course, and the course has started, you cannot claim a refund.
