Education Pack and Workshops for OUT North East

I was commissioned by OUT North East to develop an Education Pack and a series of workshops for their Emerald 55 Project, to maximise submissions to their upcoming exhibition for LGBTQ+ History Month.

What was this project about?

OUT North East are an events charity who run a number of Pride events across the North East of England, which include Gateshead, South Tyneside, and Sunderland Prides.

They gave me a brief to create an Education Pack for their upcoming February 2025 exhibition, which is to be held during LGBTQ+ History Month, with a theme of 'What makes YOU proud?'

After consultation, I created a pack designed to be used either in either youth groups or in schools with a focus on Key Stages 3, 4, and 5 students. It contains a series of CPD learning pages for staff in youth groups, schools, and colleges, to enhance their knowledge of LGBTQ+ history. Alongside this, it also contains a number of workshops, tasks, and activities, which can be completed in groups or classes, accounting for different subject disciplines and levels of depth and difficulty.

This Education Pack has also been supported by a series of outreach seminars presented to different organisations ranging from youth groups, colleges, charities, NHS groups, staff networks, and more, to motivate interest in submitting for the exhibiton. During these workshops, I presented some highlights from global LGBTQ+ histories to encourage attendees to understand that the concept of 'Pride' belongs to all, not just one community, and importantly, to gain submissions for the exhibition. These workshops were co-delivered with Justine Gillespie.

This project has been an enormous success and I look forward to the exhibition in 2025! You can view the pack here or download it below.

Feedback from OUT North East's Chair of Trustees, Peter Darrant:

"Drew was commissioned to create an education pack for our Emerald 55 Project and to spread awareness of our exhibition to a range of workplces and organisations, from hospitals to youth groups. His knowledge of the education sector combined with his excellent writing and research, have created a fantastic pack which is being used by schools across the North East of England. Furthermore, his outreach workshop delivery has been exceptional, as he talks about LGBTQ+ histories with passion. I highly recommend Drew for future projects and we will be working with him again"
